Happy World Sea Turtle Day! We're in the thick of a busy sea turtle nesting season along South Carolina's coast right now. So far, DNR staff, partners, and volunteers have counted 2,160 sea turtle nests and responded to over 100 stranded and injured sea turtles. How can you help these incredible reptiles? Here are a few tips: + Keep Lights Out! on beachfront property during nesting season. + Refrain from using flash photography on the beach at night. + Keep our beaches and ocean clean. Trash items such as plastic bags and balloons can cause injury or death when sea turtles mistake them for jellyfish, a favorite food. + Respect sea turtles by observing them from a distance on the beach. + Report dead or injured sea turtles and nest disturbances to DNR at 1-800-922-5431. + Report sightings of live, healthy turtles to DNR online (http://www.seaturtle.org/istor/). + Spread the world to help continue the conservation of sea turtles in South Carolina. ... last pic for ... I forgot to copy some pics at work as this doesn't have a pic of a turtle but we were waiting for turtles πŸ˜‚... it's a 8-10 hr boat ride (29' catamaran style boat) from pago pago to muliava ... once there we set up camp before it gets dark ... rake any existing turtle tracks so that we'll know when the mama crawls ashore ... and prep for the first night of work ... we start work at dusk then go till sunrise ... tagging each nester as they come ashore and hopefully count their eggs as they lay ... we crawl over ruble under trees and bushes ... trying to avoid the sleeping birds and rising tide ... here we're waiting to start the next walk on the hour ... we rest and enjoy the stars ... it's so clear and you see so many constellations 🌌... sometimes the moonlight is really bright but most times we need our headlamps ... it's so awesome ... can't wait for thanksgiving because we leave right after that ... Skip the plastic straw save a 🐒 for National bc sadly, ALL U.S. sea turtles are on the Endangered Species Act πŸ˜” 🌎 If plastic continues to infect our oceans, its estimated that by 2050, every seabird will have plastic in its stomach and we'll have more plastic in our ocean than 🐠🐟 🌎 Americans use 500 MILLION plastic straws A DAY. Straws are on the top 10 list of marine debris items collected during the International Coastal cleanup. Let's do our partπŸ’š πŸ™πŸΌThanks for the knowledge

Wow, flew by, and next it's ! June is pretty much ocean celebration month--I hope you all are enjoying the beach, the water, or the sunshine wherever you are. πŸ’™πŸŒŠβ˜€οΈ Since today is , here are a few simple things you can do to help make life a little safer for your local sea turtle friend: 1. Ditch the plastic straw! They are one of the most common plastic items found on beaches and are dangerous for marine animals. While you are at it try to see how much plastic you can avoid by using glass, paper, and reusable items. 2. If you live near nesting beaches, make sure you turn off bright outdoor lights that disorient hatchlings, and remove furniture at night that turtles could get trapped in 3. Sign petitions to help protect turtles from being caught as bycatch ( has one on their website) and stick to eating seafood that has a green rating from to help reduce harmful fishing practices. 4. Spread the word--and the love--for sea turtles and the ocean! Without it, we wouldn't exist. πŸ’—πŸŒŠπŸ’—

To celebrate sea turtle week, here are some turtley (!) awesome works in progress. Top is a leatherback turtle, the largest turtle species and one of the largest reptiles in the world. Left is a green turtle, which are unique among sea turtles in that they only eat plants which is thought to give them their greenish colour and name. Right is a hawkbill turtle whose beak-like mouth gives them their name. All species of sea turtle are listed under the Endangered Species Act. These little guys are ready for painting and will then be listed on my Etsy, along with the 3 other species of sea turtles.

This little green turtle (Chelonia mydas) would like to wish you a Happy World Sea Turtle Week! Remember, even after week is over, you can take steps to prevent the unnecessary harm to s worldwide. πŸ’¦πŸ’ Don't buy any turtle or tortoiseshell products πŸ’¦πŸ’ Use reusable grocery bags and recycle any plastic bags properly (floating discarded plastic bags are often ingested by sea turtles who mistake them for jellyfish and subsequently choke to death) πŸ›πŸ›’ πŸ’¦πŸ’ Don't release balloons for any reason (weddings, sports celebrations, careless children) 🚫🎈 πŸ’¦πŸ’ Support legislation and regulations that limit nighttime light pollution in coastal areas where sea turtles nest. The light can confuse baby sea turtles who may head toward the lights rather than the ocean after hatching. Even little steps like these can have a big impact! seaturtle bags

Happy ! From metal tags to GoPro cameras to solar-powered satellite tags, there are many ways to track a sea turtle. This information can help scientists understand where sea turtles live, eat, and reproduce, as well as identify potential conflicts with human activities like fishing and marine transportation. Understanding these dynamics is essential to managing and conserving sea turtle species. Photo credit: USGS turtle turtle s photography

repost from follow you Ever wonder what it might be like to swim along with a sea turtle? A team of TNC scientists temporarily attached a camera to the shell of a green sea turtle to get a glimpse into their ocean lives. Parrotfish, moray eels, and a curious hawksbill turtle all make cameo appearances in the full video as our turtle moves around the Arnavon Community Marine Conservation area in the Arnavon Islands (part of the Solomon Islands, east of Papua New Guinea). This video and more nature-based articles can be found at Cool Green Science, The Nature Conservancy’s blog devoted to all things science-- including the great work that our teams of scientists do around the world.
