Today, May 22, is National Maritime Day and also the 100th anniversary of the NOAA Corps. The NOAA Commissioned Officers Corps is one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. NOAA Corps Officers serve on the sea, on land, and in the air in a wide variety of roles. NOAA Corps officers command NOAA's fleet of research and survey ships and also pilot NOAA's environmental data-gathering aircraft, including the agency's "hurricane hunter" planes. This image shows the NOAA Ship Rainier, a hydrographic survey vessel that maps the ocean to aid maritime commerce, improve coastal resilience, and understand the marine environment. Rainier’s officers, technicians, and scientists log the data that NOAA cartographers use to create and update the nation’s nautical charts with ever-increasing data richness and precision. Rainier

NOAA's Office of Coast Survey annually plans hydrographic survey projects to measure water depths and identify new navigational hazards to keep the nation's suite of nautical charts up to date. Survey planners consider requests from marine pilots, port authorities, the U.S. Coast Guard, the boating community, and others when setting the year's schedule. The NOAA Ship Fairweather, shown here docked in Kodiak, Alaska, is one of four NOAA hydrographic ships. Visit oceanservice.noaa.gov to learn more.

Thoroughly enjoyed sailing for 9 days on NOAA Ship Pisces with these wonderful people from Newport, RI to Pascagoula, MS. We endured heavy and high seas, beautiful weather, securité calls, mid-watches, abandoned boats, the Gulf Stream, the Florida Keys, and the Gulf of Mexico. I love my new NOAA Corps family! In less than a week we will finally be finished with our training and headed off to our ships. Fair winds and following seas, my friends! ship view

NOAA Ship Ferdinand R. Hassler is one of the newest ships in NOAA’s fleet of research and survey vessels that map the ocean to aid maritime commerce, improve coastal resilience, and understand the marine environment. NOAA's Coast Survey uses data collected by the ship to create and update the nation’s nautical charts with ever-increasing data richness and precision. Here, see a view of NOAA Ship Ferdinand R. Hassler from an autonomous underwater vehicle.
