Mary Lou Williams (1910 - 1981): Pianist and composer who was a pioneer in jazz and a leading figure in bebop with a career spanning more than six decades. ⠀ ⠀ Williams taught herself to play the piano and by the age of six she was performing at parties, helping to support her family of eleven brother and sisters. She was playing professionally by the age of seven, working in locations that ranged from gambling dens to the vaudeville stage. Throughout her career, she adapted to changing musical styles, working in swing, blues and bebop. ⠀ ⠀ Williams was a force on the jazz scene with her and she was highly respected by her peers. She arranged for Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman, and she was friend, mentor, and teacher to Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Bud Powell, and Dizzy Gillespie.

They eventually contributed to the restoration of their home and created a museum in honor of Medgar Evers and his contributions to the movement.
